Drunk driving according to Swedish legislation
Below you will find the limits and the penalties for the different drunk driving crimes.
Drunk driving is driving a vehicle while having a blood alcohol content of 0.2 parts per thousand or more, which corresponds to 0.10 mg of alcohol per litre of exhaled air. Drunk driving is punishable by fines or a prison sentence of up to six months. The limit for confiscation of a driver’s license is 0.15 mg of alcohol per litre of exhaled air.
Aggravated drunk driving
Aggravated drunk driving is driving a vehicle while having a blood alcohol content of 1.0 parts per thousand or more, which corresponds to 0.50 mg alcohol per litre of exhaled air. The driver can be sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. If a driver driving under the influence of alcohol constitutes a major danger to traffic safety, they can be sentenced for aggravated drunk driving even if they are below the limit of 1.0 parts per thousand.
The following public authorities are allowed to conduct alcohol breath tests on roads and in ports:
- the Police
- the Swedish Customs
- the Swedish Coast Guard
- motor vehicle inspectors.
